In Jung and Tarot, Sallie Nichols examines the Tarot's Major Arcana through the prism of Jungian psychology. Those who haven't worked with the Tarot should know that the Major Arcana consists of the first 22 cards of a Tarot deck. When taken together, they are interpreted as telling the story of a journey of growth from innocence to wisdom.
These cards are very symbolic and often said to represent the 'big issues' that each of us faces in life as we mature. The symbols on the cards can also be seen as archetypes, which according to Jung form the collective unconscious. In this light, the cards are ageless and their insights limitless.
Nichols takes each card in turn as a map of this journey and explores the unconscious reactions that we have to the pictures and imagery along the way. In so doing, she makes pertinent and poignant references to literature, art, religion, history, philosophy and of course psychology.
Jung and Tarot is fascinating and very engaging. It will cause you to pause and consider not just the cards, but oneself as well as one's lot in life. But it's also rather heavy reading. Be warned. For instance, I would recommend a pace of no more than one card EVERY TWO WEEKS.
Nichols brings a fresh and highly erudite consideration of the Tarot. Jung and Tarot will appeal to the serious student of psychology as well as the serious student of the Tarot. Either way, you'll need to be serious as well as dedicated to make it to the end of this journey!
