Psychic Archaeology

Like many a good story, this one begins with a dream. Jeffrey Goodman, the author of Psychic Archaeology, was a graduate student when he had a dream of an archaeological discovery that would turn our notions of when civilisation began in America on its head.
But when most people would have rolled over and forgotten the dream, Goodman seeks to pinpoint the site with the assistance of a psychic who was recommended by a friend. Not only was the psychic able to pinpoint the precise location Goodman had seen in his dream, but the psychic knew exactly what treasures lay beneath the surface before Goodman had ever laid a finger on a shovel.
It might sound revolutionary – if not a bit out there, but it turns out that Goodman was not the first to rely on psychics for assistance in the field of archaeology. In his book, Goodman sets out a concise and extremely engaging history of what's now referred to as psychic archaeology.
I imagine that very few of us realise that much of what we now know and accept as fact regarding Glastonbury Cathedral was initially obtained through clairvoyance and automatic writing. But this is only one of the many interesting facts that Goodman reveals to his readers.
Even though there have been a number of high-profile successes using tried and tested psychics in archaeology, Goodman documents the disbelief and even ridicule he encountered when the establishment of which he was a member learned that on his dig he was relying on information gleaned by a psychic.
Goodman cogently argues for the responsible use of psychics and their ability to see the past of an object or to identify the exact location of treasure while it remains hidden from view as yet one more tool that archaeologists can and should rely on when trying to piece together the story of our past.
Psychic Archaeology was published back in 1977 and unfortunately is now out of print. But thanks to Amazon's marketplace, it's still possible to pick up a second-hand copy. If you do, you won't be disappointed. It truly is a fascinating and page-turning read that is rarely found in non-fiction.
