When I was a teenager, I became interested in photography. I was so keen that eventually I managed to convince my parents that an unused part of the basement could be turned into the ideal darkroom. For the next several years, I always had my trusty Canon 35 mm around my neck.

I then went to university and my interests changed. But recently the photographer in my soul woke up again and I found myself compelled to buy a new Canon. This time it's digital and not black-and-white film but I'm quickly getting reacquainted with the keen amateur I was all those years ago. Once again, I'm developing my photographer's eye.

This past week I received an email from an old friend. It was terse and straight to the point - "I've done it - I'm giving up booze for Lent." If you knew her, then you would know that this is going to be quite a challenge.
