Yesterday something happened for the first time since the 15th Century - the Pope resigned. The news stunned and shocked Catholics, non-Catholics, agnostics and atheists alike. Such things aren't supposed to happen. Conventional wisdom is that it's one of the few jobs-for-life still out there. To be sure, this was real news. No leaks. No warning. In short, no-one saw it coming.
TV channels scrambled, as they do, to begin their respective dissection of Benedict XVI's decision to step down without delay. Anchors were put on flights to the Vatican and panels of so-called experts assembled. But I had to chuckle to myself when I heard one of these panellists begin to back-peddle when he said that 'the signs had been there if you had known what to look for'.
