Perhaps it's because it's not long now until we say good-bye to 2011, but I have been in an especially reflective mood of late. Whenever I've had a moment to spare, I've found myself strolling down memory lane thinking back to all that's happened over the past 12 months.
Now, before you read any further, I want you to stop and list out 2011's top events that have either affected you personally or that you feel were the most important in the year. That's right, get pen and paper and physically jot down your top 10.
And then, look at your list - examine it and see what you can glean about it. Are there any themes or threads running through your list? Moreover, what does that list say about the person who made it? If you were to look at this list independently and objectively, would you say that a negative person or an optimistic one made it? Does it matter? Well yes, it does actually.
I wager that many of you have - unintentionally and unconsciously - highlighted everything that went wrong during 2011. To be sure, there was the earthquake and radiation leak in Japan. There were the violent protests of the Arab Spring. Conflict arose from the Libyan civil war. More and more people lost their jobs. And oh yes, let's not forget the so-called financial crisis that continued to rumble on. If these events or those of that ilk appeared on your list, then you should see it as a wake-up call.
Those of you who have lists of what you might call "negative" events - disasters, turmoil and the like - could be jeopardising your future, not to mention putting your health at risk. Scientific research recently revealed that people who dwell on the problems in their past or see their past in a pessimistic light tend to have more problems, including health problems, going forward than those who are more optimistic in their memories and recall.
Of course, it makes sense to me. As the law of attraction tells us, like attracts like. If we focus our thoughts on things that are negative, then we attract negative things to us. It's simple but true. Likewise, those of us who accentuate the positive, as the song goes, get along much better.
Naturally, the researchers had their own explanation. They explained their findings from a more psychological point of view. Those who remembered their past in negative terms were more likely to see making an effort in life as futile. They didn't apply themselves - because they saw little point in doing so. Such people experienced more depression and more physical ailments. It was reasoned, people who remember their past negatively conclude that they are fated to their lot as history would inevitably repeat itself.
How sad! Such people seem to condemn themselves before they even try!
Personally, I have a philosophy of never looking back in anger or sadness. Of course, I've had situations in my life that I wish had worked out differently. Yes, I, like everyone else, have been disappointed at times. But it's never seemed all that productive to hold on to those feelings. Instead, I like to remind myself that I'm just where I need to be at any given point. As such, I can generate a sense of gratitude - even for the "bad" times.
And in case, you're wondering - my 2011 list focused on the arboretum that I started, the progress that I've made on renovating my farmhouse, the growth of my intuitive practice and a very important wedding that took place in November.
When I look back at 2011, I can't help but smile and think to myself that it was a pretty spectacular year. Now, go back and have another go at your list. What good things can you include? Dare to put on those rose-coloured glasses - it could be just what you need to improve your life in 2012!
