Life has a way of changing our plans. Things rarely work out in a neat, orderly and tidy fashion. We have to adapt. And often we simply have to go with what we've got at that time.

I have never thought of myself as a timid kind of person. I have lived on three different continents and changed careers as soon as I knew it was time for a change. On the farm, however, I have become aware that I don't call the shots as much as I used to. Things more often than not are beyond my control – whether it be the birth of lambs or the sudden arrival of friends or family.

This past week I received an email from an old friend. It was terse and straight to the point - "I've done it - I'm giving up booze for Lent." If you knew her, then you would know that this is going to be quite a challenge.
